A new national University of Massachusetts Amherst Poll on issues facing Black Americans has found that while a majority of Americans understand the history of Juneteenth, only 42% – and just 13% of Republicans – support it being a federal holiday. A majority of Americans – 57%– say that descendants of slaves are owed a formal apology from the federal government for the institution of slavery. Just 35% say the federal government should make cash payments to descendants of slaves.
