CBS News VP debate poll shows voter reactions to Vance-Walz showdown

In the first — and likely only — vice-presidential debate between Tim Walz and JD Vance, voters who watched Tuesday night said it was an almost even match, and an overwhelming majority felt the tone of the debate was positive. Immediately following the debate, CBS News surveyed voters nationwide who reported watching it in order to get their reaction.

Registered voters who watched Tuesday’s debate between vice presidential nominees Tim Walz and JD Vance were closely divided over which candidate did the better job, according to a CNN instant poll of debate watchers conducted by SSRS, and the event left viewers with more positive views of both candidates than they held pre-debate.

The stakes were high for a vice-presidential debate, so The Washington Post once again asked uncommitted, swing-state voters in real time about their reactions to Tuesday’s debate.

Less than half of registered voters nationally have a positive view of Kamala Harris’ choice of Tim Walz to be her running mate or Donald Trump’s selection of JD Vance. A combined 46% rate Walz as either an “excellent” or “pretty good” choice, versus 41% for Vance.
