There is no doubt that Trump’s edge on immigration played a major role in his victory in 2024, and Democrats have posted a consistent and yawning deficit when it comes to who voters trust to handle the issue for years. But if opponents of Trump’s immigration agenda engage wisely in this moment, they may have an opportunity to close that gap and turn the politics of immigration around. We conducted a poll of registered voters nationally and in battleground House districts, working with Normington Petts, to understand the landscape in these first few months of Trump 2.0 and map out the most effective path to push back.

Majorities of voters believe California will be negatively impacted by the changes the Trump administration is making to the federal government. The survey also finds that Californians continue to hold very mixed and highly partisan views of the job Gavin Newsom is doing as governor, with equal proportions now reporting that they approve (46%) as disapprove (46%) of the Governor’s performance.

With 47% of Texas voters approving of the job he is doing as President and 46% disapproving, Trump remains in net-positive territory in Texas, though only barely. Continued economic uncertainty and shifts in the terrain of immigration are likely affecting both President Trump’s approval rating and many Texas voters’ views of state priorities as the Texas Legislature enters the final weeks of their 140-day session.
