Consumers Expect Decreases in Federal Benefits, Reduced Medicare, and Lower Taxes Federal Reserve Bank of New York Average expectations of decreases in housing assistance, federal student aid, subsidized preschool education, federal welfare benefits, social security benefits, and paid parental leave all increased sharply in April to series highs. The average perceived likelihood of a reduction in Medicare also increased to its highest reading since April 2017.
US Consumer Confidence Partially Rebounds in May Conference Board The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® increased by 12.3 points in May to 98.0 (1985=100), up from 85.7 in April. The Present Situation Index—based on consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions—rose 4.8 points to 135.9. The Expectations Index—based on consumers’ short-term outlook for income, business, and labor market conditions—surged 17.4 points to 72.8, but remained below the threshold of 80, which typically signals a recession ahead.
