The current administration has made immigration a signature focus, deporting large numbers of undocumented immigrants and increasing restrictions on legal immigrants in an effort to reshape the US immigration system. Yet a Chicago Council-Ipsos survey fielded April 24-26, 2026, shows that most Americans are not on board with this crackdown. Majorities express positive views of immigrants and favor granting some sort of legal status to undocumented immigrants.

As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence this July, just over one-third of Americans think the United States is living up to the founding principles of equality and freedom as laid out in that document, there's a rise in the number of Americans who think democracy in the U.S. is not working, but Americans remain steadfast in their belief that democracy will not end in their lifetime.

As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Americans remain proud of their country but pessimistic about the health and future of American democracy, according to a new national Elon University Poll. Sixty-eight percent of American adults say they are proud to be American, and 79% agree the United States plays a uniquely important role in world history. At the same time, 69% believe the signers of the Declaration of Independence would feel more disappointment than pride about modern American democracy.

These findings come from a Pew Research Center survey conducted Feb. 8-May 13, 2026. Most interviews took place after the United States and Israel launched a military campaign in Iran on Feb. 28.
